Educational games free to download

All the games are free to download, free to use and free to copy. The games are worksheet generators or printables, which means you don't need to have computers in the classroom.
The programs are very simple and create very fast worksheets for the students. With most programs you have to add your own words or sentences. Therefore the games are ideal for practicing and testing the vocabulary or grammar you have been teaching yours students.

Word games

  • The Bingo game is a variation on the world famous bingo game. But instead of using numbers our Bingo game works with words. As a teacher you will fill the words in the program and the program generates multiple bingo boards which can be used to play bingo in classroom. The bingo games are controlled practice activities to help students recognise, match and remember vocabulary items, and to improve listening skills.
  • The crossword programs generates a crossword card for the teacher, and copies for the students. The teacher has to fill the words in the program and the program then generates all the cards. You can use the crossword software to practice words and themes taught in class.
  • In every leave of the Daisy is a word printed, but the letters are shuffled. All the words in the leaves have a one letter in common. This letter is not printed in the leaves, but should be placed in the middle of the Daisy. The goal is to find out which letter is the common letter. To find the common letter, the students have to the finds in the leaves and then they will find to common letter.
  • This Scrabble game is a variant of the famous Scrabble board game. The student will get all a sheet of paper with tiles. In each tile is a letter and a value printed. The students have to form words with these tiles. You can set different goals for the game; the one wins who has formed the most words or who has the highest word-value. Or the one wins with the longest word or who formed the words with the highest word-value.
  • Word Ladder (also known as a doublets, word-links, or Word golf) is a word game that begins with two words, and to solve the puzzle one must find a chain of other words to link the two, where at each step the words differ by altering a single letter.
    For example:
    Starting words are COLD and WARM.
    The solution is: COLD -> CORD -> CARD -> WARD -> WARM
  • The software scrambles words and the learners must unscramble them. The software is useful for practising spelling.
  • Word Pyramid is a game wehere students have to fill in words in a pyramid. The students will get for each level a clue. For every next answer the students have to use the letters from the previous step and add one extra letter.
  • Word search game, also know as word find game, are popular for helping students recognize words. In searching for words in a grid, the students seem to read and memorize the words in a way that they enjoy and which helps them learn the words and their spelling. It can be used as an introduction or review activity.
  • Word Wheel is a letter forming game. Create as many words as possible with the letter in the wheel. The programs comes with an English dictionary. To create the word wheel you can pick a word from the dictionary or you can type your own word. The word wheel program helps the teacher by printing all the words from the dictionary that can be formed with the letters from the wheel.

Sentence Games

  • The software replaces words with symbols and students must use the key to find the sentences. The Decoder programs are useful for presenting target language in a fun way, or as unusual controlled practice activities for students.
  • The letters of a saying have fallen of the board. The letters are printed under the board in the correct column. The task of the student is the find the correct row on the board for the letters to reconstruct the saying.
  • A gap fill is a practice exercise in which learners have to replace words missing from a text. These words are chosen and removed in order to practise a specific language point.
  • The program will mix up a sentence that is filled in by the teacher. For the students the task to put back the words in the correct order.
  • Your mobile phone is not working correctly. You try to type a sms message on your phone, but the phone doesn't display the text. Instead it shows only the numbers of the keys you have pressed. Now you ask the students for help to decipher the message.
