Worked example — convert 34 to a decimal

Method A
Long division

We want to calculate 34.

  1. Divide 3 by 4. Since 4 does not fit into 3, write 0. and add a zero → 30.
  2. Now divide 30 by 4. It fits 7 times because 7×4=28. Remainder = 2.
  3. Bring down another 0 → 20. Divide 20 by 4. It fits 5 times because 5×4=20. Remainder = 0 → stop.

Final result: 0.75.

Method B
Equivalent fraction with denominator 100

Rewrite 34 as a fraction over 100. Multiply numerator and denominator by 25: 75100. Now simply read it as 0.75.
