How to Play a Crossword Online

Choose one of the saved puzzles at the bottom of the page and click Load. The grid and clues appear in a few seconds.

  • Click a clue — the matching word highlights in yellow in the grid and the cursor jumps to its first letter. Start typing straight away.
  • Click a cell in the grid — the word is highlighted in yellow and its clue is highlighted in the clue list. If a cell belongs to both a horizontal and a vertical word, the first click selects the horizontal word; click the same cell again to switch to the vertical word.
  • Type in the grid — just start typing. Letters are placed in the highlighted word one by one, and the cursor advances automatically.
  • Hint button — reveals one random letter of the selected word. Costs 10 points from your score.
  • Check puzzle — highlights all incorrect and missing letters so you can spot and fix your mistakes. Costs 20 points.

How many crossword puzzles are available to play?

How do I use the Hint button?

 Click on a word in the grid or select a clue to highlight it, then press the "Hint" button. The game will reveal one random letter from that word. Note that each hint costs 10 points from your score.

What does the "Check Puzzle" button do?

 "Check Puzzle" highlights all incorrectly placed or missing letters in the grid so you can see exactly where you have made mistakes. Using this feature costs 20 points from your score.

How does the scoring work?

 You start with a full score. Using the Hint button deducts 10 points per hint, and using Check Puzzle deducts 20 points. Solve the puzzle without any help to achieve the highest possible score.

Can I type accented letters like é or ñ in the puzzle?

 No. To keep the game playable on tablets, we use an on-screen keyboard instead of the device's built-in keyboard. This on-screen keyboard only supports standard letters, so accented characters cannot be entered.
