Connecting Long Division to Decimal Arithmetic
The long division algorithm does not stop at the first remainder — it continues past the decimal point by appending zeros to the dividend. This extension is the same four-step sequence students already know, and practising it builds a concrete understanding of what decimal fractions actually mean.
Each problem on these worksheets is constructed using divisors that produce a terminating decimal (such as ÷2, ÷4, ÷5, or ÷8), so students can complete the calculation in a finite number of steps without encountering a repeating decimal.
How to Continue Past the Decimal Point
- Complete the whole-number steps of long division as normal, until you reach a remainder smaller than the divisor.
- Place a decimal point in the quotient above the line.
- Append a zero to the remainder and divide again.
- Repeat until the remainder is zero. The quotient is a terminating decimal.
