How to Create Your Multiplication Battle Cards

  1. Set the number range — enter individual values separated by commas (e.g. 1,5,10) or a continuous range (e.g. 1-10). Use the Easy, Medium, or Hard shortcuts to apply a preset instantly.
  2. Show game name on cards — uncheck this if you prefer a more neutral look. The name battle can feel too aggressive for young players; unchecking it leaves just the numbers on each card.
  3. Enter the number of cards — type any even number from 8 to 120. Each page holds 6 cards.

How to Play Multiplication Battle

Setup

Players: 2 or more. Shuffle the cards and deal them equally face down between the players.

Game Play

  1. Each player turns over the top card of their pile and places it face up in the middle.
  2. Each player multiplies the two numbers shown on their own card and announces the product.
  3. The player with the highest product wins all the cards on the table and places them at the bottom of their pile.
  4. If two players have equal products, there is a battle:
    • Each player places one card face down.
    • Then each player places one card face up and calculates the new product.
    • The player with the higher new product wins all the cards in the middle.
    • If the new products are also equal, repeat the battle until one player wins the round.
  5. The first player to collect all the cards wins.

Classroom tip

Have students write their working on a mini whiteboard or scratch paper so the calculation is visible to both players. This keeps everyone honest and reinforces the habit of showing working.

This game is also known as the Multiplication War card game. We call it Multiplication Battle because the word war can feel too aggressive for young players. The rules are identical — if you are searching for a printable multiplication war game, you are in the right place.

Which Grade Level Is Multiplication Battle For?

  • Grade 2–3 — Use the Easy preset (1–5). Students practise the simplest times tables in a game setting, building early confidence with multiplication facts.
  • Grade 3–4 — Use the Medium preset (1–10). Students practise the full set of times tables up to 10, building both speed and accuracy.
  • Grade 4 and above — Use the Hard preset (1–12) for the extended times tables. The competitive element pushes students to recall multiplication facts quickly.
Note: Cards are shuffled and flipped at random, so each round produces a different multiplication problem. No two games are the same.

How do you play Multiplication Battle?

 Shuffle the cards and deal them equally face down between the players. Each player flips their top card face up. Both players multiply the two numbers shown on their own card, then compare products. The player with the higher product wins all the cards on the table and places them at the bottom of their pile. If the products are equal, there is a battle: each player places one card face down, then one card face up, and the player with the higher product on the new face-up card wins all the cards. The first player to collect all the cards wins.

What number range should I choose?

 Use the Easy preset (1-5) for students who are just starting with multiplication tables. The Medium preset (1-10) covers the full set of times tables and suits students who are practising their multiplication facts. The Hard preset (1-12) extends the practice to the 12 times table, which is ideal for students who are confident with 1-10 and ready for a challenge.

How many cards should I print?

 For two players, a deck of 24 to 36 cards keeps the game moving at a good pace. Larger decks of 48 or more cards suit longer sessions or groups that want more variety. The number of cards must be even so that each player receives an equal share.

Can Multiplication Battle be adapted for more than two players?

 Yes. With three or four players, deal the cards as evenly as possible. On each turn all players flip their top card, calculate their product, and the player with the highest product takes all the cards. If two or more players tie for the highest product, only those players take part in the battle round. The first player to collect all the cards wins.
