How to Create Your Subtraction Battle Cards

  1. Set the number range — enter individual values separated by commas (e.g. 1,5,10) or a continuous range (e.g. 1-20). Use the Easy, Medium, or Hard shortcuts to apply a preset instantly.
  2. Show game name on cards — uncheck this if you prefer a more neutral look. The name battle can feel too aggressive for young players; unchecking it leaves just the numbers on each card.

How to Play Subtraction Battle

Setup

Players: 2 or more. Shuffle the cards and deal them equally face down between the players.

Game Play

  1. Each player turns over the top card of their pile and places it face up in the middle.
  2. Each player subtracts the smaller number from the larger number shown on their own card and announces the difference.
  3. The player with the lowest difference wins all the cards on the table and places them at the bottom of their pile.
  4. If two players have equal differences, there is a battle:
    • Each player places one card face down.
    • Then each player places one card face up and calculates the new difference.
    • The player with the lower new difference wins all the cards in the middle.
    • If the new differences are also equal, repeat the battle until one player wins the round.
  5. The first player to collect all the cards wins.

Classroom tip

Have students write their working on a mini whiteboard or scratch paper so the calculation is visible to both players. This keeps everyone honest and reinforces the habit of showing working.

Which Grade Level Is Subtraction Battle For?

  • Grade 1–2 — Use the Easy preset (1–10). Students subtract single-digit numbers, making it an ideal first introduction to subtraction in a game setting.
  • Grade 2–3 — Use the Medium preset (1–20). Students practise subtracting numbers up to 20, building both speed and confidence with basic subtraction facts.
  • Grade 3 and above — Use the Hard preset (1–100) for two-digit subtraction. The competitive element pushes students to calculate quickly and accurately.
Note: Cards are shuffled and flipped at random, so each round produces a different subtraction problem. No two games are the same.

How do you play Subtraction Battle?

 Shuffle the cards and deal them equally face down between the players. Each player flips their top card face up. Both players subtract the smaller number from the larger number shown on their own card, then compare differences. The player with the lowest difference wins all the cards on the table and places them at the bottom of their pile. If the differences are equal, there is a battle: each player places one card face down, then one card face up, and the player with the lowest difference on the new face-up card wins all the cards. What number range should I choose?

 Use the Easy preset (1-10) for young students who are just starting out with subtraction. The Medium preset (1-20) increases the difficulty and suits students who are confident subtracting single-digit numbers. The Hard preset (1-100) is ideal for students practising two-digit subtraction under the light pressure of competitive play.

How many cards should I print?

 For two players, a deck of 24 to 36 cards keeps the game moving at a good pace. Larger decks of 48 or more cards suit longer sessions or groups that want more variety. The number of cards must be even so that each player receives an equal share.

Can Subtraction Battle be adapted for more than two players?

 Yes. With three or four players, deal the cards as evenly as possible. On each turn all players flip their top card, calculate their difference, and the player with the lowest difference takes all the cards. If two or more players tie for the lowest difference, only those players take part in the battle round. The first player to collect all the cards wins.
