What Are Multi-Digit Addition Worksheets with Regrouping?

Multi-digit addition worksheets in vertical column format stack each addend one above the other, aligned by place value. Students add each column from right to left and regroup (carry) when a column total exceeds 9 — writing the tens digit above the next column and the units digit below the line. This is the standard algorithm taught from Grade 2 onward and the format used in most assessments.

The generator scales across Grades 2–6: 2 digits (tens and units) for Grade 2, 3 digits (hundreds) for Grade 3, up to 6 digits for Grades 5–6. Increasing the number of addends from 2 to 3 or 4 adds more carry steps and a greater working-memory load — an instant difficulty increase without changing the number size.

How to Use the Generator

  1. Set Number of digits (1–6) to control the size of each addend — 2 digits for Grade 2, 3 digits for Grade 3, and so on.
  2. Set Number of addends (1–4) to choose how many numbers appear in each sum. More addends = more carry steps.
  3. Choose Problems per page — 20, 25, or 30.
  4. Click Create to preview, or Show Solution to verify all answers before printing.
  5. Click Download to save the PDF, with an optional answer key page.

FAQ — Multi-Digit Addition Worksheet Generator

What does "Number of digits" control?

It sets the number of digits in each addend. 1 digit gives single-digit numbers (1–9). 2 digits gives addends from 10 to 99. 3 digits runs from 100 to 999. Each extra digit adds one more column of regrouping practice, up to 6-digit numbers.

What does "Number of addends" control?

It sets how many numbers are added together in each problem. 2 addends gives a standard two-number sum (a + b). 3 addends gives a + b + c, and 4 addends gives a + b + c + d. More addends means more carry steps and a greater working-memory load — an easy way to raise difficulty without changing the number size.

Is an answer key included in the download?

Yes. Before downloading, tick the "Solution page" option to include a fully completed answer sheet in the PDF. This makes self-marking or teacher marking straightforward.

What grade level are these worksheets suitable for?

2-digit addition is ideal for Grade 2 students being introduced to regrouping. Move to 3 digits for Grade 3, 4 digits for Grade 4, and 5–6 digits for Grades 5–6. Using 3 or 4 addends increases the challenge at any digit level and suits differentiation within Grades 3–6.
