Sentence Bricks — A Word Order Puzzle
Can you rebuild the wall? A sentence is broken into bricks of three characters each (including spaces, commas, and dots). The bricks are shuffled — your students must put them back in the correct order to reveal the hidden sentence. Because the chunks are smaller than whole words, students cannot simply read the sentence at a glance. This makes sentence bricks a more challenging alternative to standard word-scramble activities, and an excellent exercise for spelling and sentence-structure awareness.

How to Create a Sentence Bricks Puzzle
1. Enter Your Sentence
Type or paste one or more sentences into the sentence text box. Each sentence will become its own row of bricks on the wall. You can also search the phrase database by keyword to find ready-made sayings.
2. Search for Phrases (Optional)
Type a keyword into the search box to browse sayings and phrases from the website. Copy any phrase you like and paste it into the sentence field.
3. Choose a Shuffle Mode
Select Per Row to shuffle the bricks within each row separately — a good starting point for most classes. Select Whole Wall to mix all bricks from all rows together for a much harder challenge.
4. Generate and Download
Click Create the Sentence Bricks puzzle to preview the wall, then click Download to save a print-ready PDF worksheet.
Why Use Sentence Bricks in the Classroom?
Sentence bricks work at the sub-word level — three characters per brick — so students must think carefully about spelling and structure to reconstruct the sentence.
- Deeper word-order practice. Unlike word-scramble puzzles, students cannot simply recognise words at a glance. They must engage with the text at the character level.
- Works with any sentence. Use vocabulary from your current unit, proverbs, famous quotes, grammar examples, or any text relevant to your class.
- Adjustable difficulty. Per Row shuffle is accessible for most learners; Whole Wall shuffle is a genuine challenge even for advanced students.
- Built-in phrase database. Use the keyword search to find ready-made sayings when you need content quickly.
- Free and unlimited. Download as many worksheets as you need — no account required for downloading.
