Why 2-Digit Divisors Are a Key Milestone
Moving from 1-digit to 2-digit divisors is the biggest jump in the long division curriculum. With a single-digit divisor, students can recall the quotient digit from their times tables. With a 2-digit divisor, they must estimate — pick a trial digit, multiply, check whether the product is too large or too small, and adjust. This estimation step is a genuine mathematical thinking skill, not just a procedure.
These worksheets provide structured practice at exactly that step, with enough space to try, multiply, check, and erase if needed.
How to Divide by a 2-Digit Number
- Look at the first two or three digits of the dividend and estimate how many times the divisor fits.
- Write your estimate above the line and multiply: estimate × divisor.
- If the product is larger than the portion of the dividend you are working with, reduce your estimate by one and try again.
- Subtract the product, bring down the next digit, and repeat.
