Advanced Long Division Practice

Three-digit divisor long division is the most demanding form of the standard algorithm taught at primary and lower secondary school. The estimation step becomes more involved: students must round a three-digit divisor, form a trial quotient, multiply, and often make two or three adjustments before finding the correct digit.

These worksheets give students generous working space to trial-multiply and correct their estimates without running out of room. The optional answer key lets teachers identify exactly where in the process a student is going wrong.

How to Approach 3-Digit Division

  1. Round the divisor to the nearest hundred (e.g. treat 347 as 300) to form a quick estimate of the quotient digit.
  2. Multiply your trial digit by the full divisor — not the rounded version — to check the product.
  3. If the product exceeds the working portion of the dividend, reduce your estimate; if the remainder after subtracting equals or exceeds the divisor, increase it.
  4. Subtract, bring down the next digit, and repeat until all digits have been brought down.
