How to Divide a Fraction by a Whole Number

To divide a fraction by a whole number — also written as a fraction divided by a whole number — use the keep, change, flip method:

  1. Keep the fraction as it is.
  2. Change the division sign to multiplication.
  3. Flip the whole number — write it as 1 divided by that number (its reciprocal).

Example — divide a fraction by a whole number: 3/4 ÷ 2

= 3/4 × 1/2 = (3 × 1) / (4 × 2) = 3/8

Why does this work? The reciprocal of any whole number n is 1/n. Dividing by n is identical to multiplying by 1/n — splitting something into n equal parts gives the same result as taking 1/n of it.
