How to Divide Mixed Numbers

To divide mixed numbers, always start by converting every mixed number to an improper fraction. Then apply the keep, change, flip rule and simplify.

  1. Convert all mixed numbers to improper fractions. Multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator. Example: 2 1/2 = (2 × 2 + 1) / 2 = 5/2.
  2. Keep the first fraction unchanged.
  3. Change the division sign (÷) to multiplication (×).
  4. Flip the second fraction (write its reciprocal).
  5. Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
