How to solve a Sum Sudoku puzzle

  1. Follow standard Sudoku rules. Place digits 1 through 9 so that each digit appears exactly once in every row, every column, and every 3x3 region.
  2. Use the edge sums. The numbers printed outside each bold region line show the total of the first three cells in that row or column within the region. Use these to narrow down which digits can go in those cells.
  3. Use the corner sums. The number in each region corner gives the sum of the three diagonal cells of that 3x3 block. This extra clue helps rule out digits in the corners and centre of each region.
  4. Work by elimination. Combine arithmetic constraints with standard Sudoku logic — a digit ruled out by a sum clue in one direction often forces a placement in another.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the numbers printed outside the bold region lines mean?

 Each number outside a bold line shows the sum of the first three cells in that row or column within the adjacent 3x3 region. Use these sums as arithmetic clues to work out which digits must go in those three cells.

What do the numbers in the corners of each region mean?

 The corner number gives the sum of the three diagonal cells of that 3x3 region — the cells running from one corner of the block to the opposite corner. This extra constraint is unique to Sum Sudoku and helps narrow down the solution.

What does the difficulty Level setting change?

 The Level controls how many cells are pre-filled in the puzzle. Very Easy puzzles have more starting digits so less arithmetic is needed; Very Hard puzzles rely almost entirely on the sum clues with very few given numbers.

Does the downloaded PDF include an answer sheet?
